It is my sad duty to report that Alan C. Campbell, 60, of Littleton, NH died after an extended illness on October 27, 2011. Alan was one of five children of the late Dorothy and Scottie Campbell. The Campbell family summered on Bustins for many years, living in the Bean Cottage, the Langmead Cottage, Island View, and at the store, which Scottie and Dot ran for countless years. Many of us in the boomer age range were friends of Alan’s siblings as we grew up. Alan leaves his wife Kathy Campbell and his three children Ethan, Erin and Meredith. Alan also leaves his brother Phil, and sisters Regina andAlice. He was predeceased by his younger sister Vickie. Alan was employed at the Profile School in Bethlehem, NH as a high school guidance counselor. His service is on Saturday, November 19th at 11:00 AM at the Profile School in Bethlehem, NH.

Memorial Service to be held at Profile School at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 19th in the gymnasium. A reception will follow the service. Alan requested donations be made to the Joey Altobelli Scholarship Fund in lieu of flowers. Checks may be made out to the Joey Altobelli Scholarship Fund and sent directly to Profile School.

Dear Family and Friends:

Since I don’t know which people Dolly Howard sent this to, there may be some overlapping. To others this may be the first news you have had about the passing the other day of my sister-in-law, Anne Barrows. I’ve tried to include everyone on my email list who may have known Anne.

Anne was in a “rehab” facility, recovering from the shock of John’s passing., when suddenly, the other day, she decided to join him. This email from Dolly is the most beautiful letter I can imagine; I’m sure I could not done as well, so I thank her with all my heart.

I should mention this has been a particularly “heavy” time for Dolly and her friends. Not only has she lost my brother and his wife, but also her own dear mother whom she cared for many years.. Since she is an ordained pastor, I suspect there are other friends I don’t know about. she has been involved with. I ask that you keep keep her in your prayers too, for she has been quite sick w/a persistent cold-type illness for several weeks. Bill

Excerpts from a letter written to Bill Barrows:

Anne was a creative gal. A nurse by occupation & an animal lover & devoted mom to her two daughters Laura & Barb, both wonderful women of intelligence & grace. Anne spoke so proudly of her daughters & adored her granddaughter, the light of her life. Barb has adopted Heidi the wonderful lab that was fur daughter for John & Anne for many years. My dogs loved Heidi & when John & Anne were in town we would go to various places where these 3 big dogs could run freely & romp & play, chase down good smells, chase squirrels & just be dogs. Heidi normally did not return as clean as Anne would like. My dogs “influence” perhaps?

I did many things with Anne & John when they were in town, normally on the way to the cottage in Maine for the yearly month long vacation. It was fun going through some past photos just now to smile & recall the great times we shared. They loved the old family vacation spot on Bustin Island but each year the journey & all involved got more difficult. Anne was a great conversationalist & a woman with extensive reading & knowledge. She humbled me.

Just letting you all know. As we get older more & more of our friends and family step over to the great beyond & we must keep their memory (and I LOVE MY PHOTO REMEMBRANCES) & the times shared in our hearts.

Prayers for Barb & Laura. Losing two parents in a short period of time is difficult. And they had a difficult year with all the illness, hospitals, rehabs centers, nursing centers etc. They were devoted daughters to their parents

“One never dies if their memory lives in the hearts of others”

Warm regards,

Dolly Howard

Brunswick – Marion Elizabeth Hancock, 88, of Cumberland Center, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick with her family by her side. She was born on June 20, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY and was the daughter of Edwin John and Elsie Margaret (Olsen) Nelson.

Marion grew up in West Englewood, NJ and graduated from Teaneck High School in 1939 where she enjoyed and excelled in all academics, athletics and music. She could run like the wind and played field hockey, baseball and tennis and downhill skied on skis handmade by her brother. She loved all kinds of music and her favorite piece to play on the piano was “Angel’s Prayer.” Her yearbook stated that “she was always willing to help” which held true throughout her lifetime.

She met her husband, Jim, while working in the accounting department at Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River, NY and soon after they married on January 2, 1953. They moved with her mom to New City, NY (Rockland County) where she lovingly raised their three children Kathy, Jimmy and Carol.

It was a three generation household. Marion’s beloved father died when she was 23 years old, so she and her mom always lived together until Elsie’s passing in 1990. They were an unstoppable homemaking team and always enjoyed each other’s company. Marion was also very close to her brother, Edwin, and we will always have treasured memories of our weekly Saturday get-togethers, holiday celebrations and Cape Cod vacations with his family. She was very proud of her Norwegian and Swedish heritage which was reflected in her attention to detail while creating a cozy home with a cup of coffee and a piece of Norwegian apple cake always available.

She was a great mom. An after school snack was always ready for us and she was always there to hear about our explorations in the woods or our adventures on our bikes. She taught us to be kind to animals including any frogs, turtles or bugs that came home with us. We are thankful for her compassion, her great sense of humor and for sharing her deep appreciation of nature with us.

In 1992, Jim and Marion moved to Cumberland Center to be near their summer home on Bustins Island and their daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Dave. There was a special place in her heart for Dave and she was always grateful for his care and kindness. During the summer, Jim and Marion enjoyed their daily walks around Bustins, always stopping along the way to notice a flower, watch a gull’s flight or to chat with other islanders .They loved going to Two Lights for a lobster roll followed by sitting on a bench overlooking the ocean. They did everything together and took good care of each other for 57 years.

Marion was a wonderful grandma to Carol’s two sons, Michael and Chris, who will always remember her feisty spirit and her genuine interest in their lives. We will all miss her caring ways and her sparkly blue eyes.

Marion was predeceased by her brother, Edwin J. Nelson II in 2008. She is survived by her loving husband, Jim Hancock of Cumberland Center; her daughter, Kathy and her husband Dave Stager of North Yarmouth; her son, Jim and his wife Tori Hancock of Petaluma, CA; her daughter, Carol DeNino and two grandsons, Michael and Christopher DeNino, all of Gaithersburg, MD; her sister-in-law, Audrey Nelson and nieces and nephews of Pearl River, NY.

A memorial service and burial will take place in the spring in New Jersey.

Condolences can be sent to Jamie Hancock at 8 Maple St., Cumberland Center, ME 04021.

Hello All,

I spent a few lovely hours on Bustins this past weekend. All looks very well.

FYI-if you haven’t heard, it looks like it is going to be a bad year for brown tail moths. For the first few weeks the caterpillars return to their nests (tents) at night, but after that they remain on the leaves.

If you are planning an early season trip, factor in a little caterpillar massacre time. In the evening (if possible) trim off the nests and drown them. One female can lay 200-400 eggs when she’s grown up (July)…
